Our very first Think Inside the Box Workshop happened in Jersey City on August 23–24, and wow… what a creative, collaborative, wild ride it was!
This was our first time hosting a workshop, and honestly, it blew our expectations out of the water. Everyone jumped in and helped design two totally wild sets, styled two gorgeous models with full hair and makeup, and worked with some killer lighting setups. The energy in the room was nonstop.
We started with some journaling and introspection to help everyone declutter their minds and get in touch with new ideas. We shared all about conceptual photography and the tools we use to come up with photoshoot concepts. The attendees used creative journaling exercises to develop two photoshoot concepts based on an emotion they wanted to explore as a group.
We talked about creative parameters and how limitations aren’t a bad thing but actually help guide your creativity. For the workshop, the parameters were:
The emotions the group picked were freedom and despair. That meant designing one set that represented freedom and one for despair, and then styling, lighting, and photographing on those sets to really bring the concept to life.
We also talked about color theory and how color sets the emotional tone of your shoot. The group ended up going with a greenish-yellow set for freedom and a deep purple set for despair.
Every attendee came up with their own narrative and storyline for their shoots. They learned how to direct models to create real, authentic emotion—because posing alone isn’t enough. Directing brings the story and the emotion out in a way that makes your photos feel alive.
On day two, attendees got to style the models’ hair, makeup, and outfits to match their concepts. We talked through lighting and how you can shape it intentionally to add mood and story. Then…it was time to shoot on the sets they designed!
It was colorful, collaborative, creative, and just so much fun. Every single person put their energy and ideas into the sets and the shoots, and it really showed in the photos.
We are so excited to keep this going! We’re hosting two more workshops in 2026—one in Richmond, VA and one in Los Angeles, CA.
