All About The Journey
We built a photography studio into the back of our truck. Then we drove it across America.
We're two artists moving from Virginia to Los Angeles, turning a 7,500+ mile road trip into a 35-day art project. We're photographing the same handmade set against dramatically different landscapes across the country.
THE JOURNEY
35 days. 7,500+ miles. Coast to coast.
What started as a four-day move from Virginia to Los Angeles turned into a 35-day cross-country art project.
Along the way, we're taking the same handmade photography set through coastal dunes, forests, mountains, badlands, red rock deserts, and everything in between.
One set. An entire country of backdrops.
Meet the Cast.
One woman lost in time. One truck nearing 200,000 miles. One photography studio that probably shouldn't exist.
Meet Bev.
Bev has somehow found herself trapped in a wormhole through time. One moment she's somewhere familiar. The next, she's in a completely different landscape, with absolutely no idea how she ended up there.
She's our main character, our story, and the reason we keep driving.
Meet Betty.
Betty is our 2006 Toyota Tacoma. She's approaching 200,000 miles, has two-wheel drive, and is currently hauling an entire photography studio across America.
Nobody asked Betty if she wanted to spend 35 days driving through mountains, deserts, and questionable weather. But she's doing it anyway, averaging an estimated 15.5 miles per gallon with a giant art project strapped to her back.
Not bad for a truck old enough to vote.
The Mobile Studio.
We built a reverse forced-perspective tunnel directly into the bed of our 2006 Toyota Tacoma. A series of nested frames creates the illusion of a much deeper space, while the opening reveals the real landscape behind it.
Using Flashpoint strobes, we're lighting the set like a professional studio, even when we're parked in the middle of nowhere.
The set stays the same. The world around it changes.
The Support Crew.
One built the set and drives the truck. The other sheds in it.
David.
The builder, problem solver, lighting guy, and designated driver. He helped dream up this entire project, figured out how to make it work, and now has to drive it across America.
Joey.
Nine years old. No photography experience. Attends every shoot, supervises absolutely nothing, and remains convinced this entire trip is about him.
The Journey Journal.
