Props can add a lot to a photoshoot. They can become a part of the overall message or story you are working to convey by adding humor or drama. Sometimes they can add to the posing within a shoot. And other props can add an exciting visual element to the shoot.
We’ve played with a lot of props over the years, and these are some of our very favorites.
Maps are so outdated. You never see people looking at a map anymore, which makes them so fun to use in shoots. They are a great prop to add into a shoot if you are trying to create a sense of confusion or uncertainty. Folded maps are my favorite because they are oversized and you can crinkle them up or tear them apart to highlight even more distress within a photo.
We've used fake money a handful of times. It's great for adding a storyline to developing a character within a photoshoot. You can stuff money places, throw it in the air, or just have stacks of it casually placed throughout an image.
Hippie powder is a solid addition to any shoot where you want to add a little color and attraction. I love using it in nude shoots to conceal body parts. When you combine hippie powder with creative lighting setups, you can get some wild results.
Old phones are one of my favorite photoshoot props because they are perfect for conveying a sense of connection or disconnection. They also make you question the time period of the images as a whole and create a sense of nostalgia.
Slime is so fun to work with in a shoot. It adds both color and texture to any shoot. It also gives the model something very playful to interact with all through the shoot. This is my favorite DIY slime.
There is so much great fake food on amazon. I love adding fake food to shoots because it creates satire and adds humor. This giant fake burger is one of my favorite props simply because it is so unrealistic.
Binoculars are a great addition to a shoot because it creates the sense that something is happening outside of the frame that we aren’t aware of. It can also appear as if the subject in the photo is staring at you, the viewer. They can be a powerful storytelling tool and a great way to abstract a face.
Hats are a perfect prop to create a wider variety of poses, help develop a character, or conceal faces. Not to mention hats come in all shapes, styles, and colors so you can have alot of fun with styling a full loook around a good hat.
