How We Were able to Exhibit Our Photos at Miami Art Week And Art Basel!

Last year, David and I went to Miami for Art Basel and Miami art week for fun. We had no idea what to expect, we just knew it was a cool thing that artists did - so we went. Our minds were blown by the sheer amount of art we saw. We saw art that questioned us, inspired us, and confused us. It set our imaginations on fire. I think that was when I really knew I wanted to be considered an artist first and a photographer second. Showing our work in a fine art gallery setting became a major goal, and I had a to figure out how to make it happen.

I set a goal that next year, we would have our work shown at one of the shows during Miami Art Week. At that time, we had never shown our work before and I had zero clue how to make it happen, but where there is a goal there is a way.

I started keeping my eyes open for opportunities to get our art out into the world and shown by any means possible. Photo contests and gallery open calls kept showing up on my instagram feed. I began applying to any photo contest that provided exposure or where the prize was have your work shown in a major capacity. I got pretty good at photo contests and my effort paid off. Over the past year, we have had our work shown in London, Germany, Cinncinati, Richmond, and Miami.

I wasn't sure if there would be any photo contests where the prize was showing your work during Miami Art Week. I kept my eyes peeled and stayed hopeful, and one appeared! I put alot of thought into my entry, and two weeks later we received a very exciting email saying that we won! Our photos would be exhibited in the Spectrum Art Fair during Miami Art Week.

The timeline for getting our work ready and shipped to Miami was incredibly tight. We had one week to build four frames, print, mount, and frame our photos and ship them to Miami. We were hyper focused and accomplished our goal literally with only minutes to spare.

We flew to Miami for a super quick trip (36hrs!) to see our photos hang in the show. This experience really proved to me that when you set your mind to something and stay focused, anything is possible and the universe will conspire in your favor.
