This was a surreal, conceptual fashion editorial shoot, photographed against a cloud backdrop. The shoot showcases business casual looks inspired by early 70s spring wardrobes. We used a variety of lighting setups to highlight each of the three distinct looks.
Photo sets don’t have to be over-the-top—sometimes a simple backdrop is all you need! We challenged ourselves to create surreal, high-concept shots using just a cloud fabric backdrop and a grass floor mat from Kate Backdrops.
David lit the scene to mimic a sunny spring day, using a three light setup using continuous light. We used two Nanlite Forza 500 BII's on each side of the set and a Forza 60 C with a fresnel.
I brought the storyline and posing to life. I build a narrative into every shoot I direct, using posing prompts and stories to create authentic emotion in each shot.
These were the posing prompts I used:
• A businesswoman caught in the rain
• Sunshine on your face on a spring day
• Pretending you’re a giant
• Lost travelers on vacation
• Playing God
Directing like this makes every shoot so much more fun! If you want to try using posing prompts on your next shoot, you can download some of my favorite ones for free by entering your email address here!
