The 100 Set Project Broken Down

Goal: Build 100 sets and photograph100 shoots in 1 year.

Why: We wanted to build a portfolio of our conceptual portrait work as fast as we possibly could.

  • It was all based on the quote "If you give yourself 30 days to clean your home, it will take you 30 days. But if you give yourself 3 hours, it will take 3 hours. The same applies to your goals, ambitions, and potential."

How: In order to meet the deadline we had to do an average of 2-3 shoots per week.

  • This was on top of our normal workload of wedding and portrait work. So we had to be incredibly strategic with how we divided our time.

Process: Design the set, go shopping to style the model and the set, build, paint, light, shoot.

  • We only gave ourselves one day from start to finish to do everything

Conceptualizing the shoot: our inspiration came from movies, art books, and architecture.

  • We came up with a concept for each shoot (usually centering around concepts of entrapment, defeat, and struggle).
  • We designed the set to further articulate the concept, and we built a loose storyline around the concept.
  • We styled the models to match the aesthetic of the sets and gathered props to include in the shoot.

Models: Our models were all people that we connected with through Instagram or friends and family members.

  • Our models ranged from ages 5 - 60

Lighting: We used Paul C. Buff lighting to light every shoot.

  • We used creative methods of diffusion and down lighting to light our surreal worlds.

The Result: We found our artistic voices and developed a body of work with a clear vision and point of view.

  • We are in the process of designing a coffee table book with images from the project as well as preparing work to sell.
