We built coffins for Kevin Smith and Harley Quinn Smith for a photoshoot that was equal parts spooky and cartoony. The color palette was black and red to give it a dramatic, bold vibe. Our goal with the coffins was to make them look almost hand-drawn. We went oversized with them to enhance the playful, cartoonish feel, and David used uneven, dramatic angles to really give them that quirky, animated look. He pretty much freehand sculpted each one, so they’re slightly different from each other.
We shot the coffins on a bright red seamless paper backdrop, which contrasted perfectly with the black coffins. David lit the set using rim lights with red gels to amp up the surreal feel and add an extra layer of drama.
This was a quick build and shoot, but everything came together really smoothly.
After we wrapped up these photos, we took some portrait photos of the two of them for the cover of their new podcast - Beardless, D*ckless Me.
During the shoot, we tried out tons of different poses and scenarios to capture emotion. It was a little intimidating to direct a director, but Kevin was super kind and brought his big personality to the set. We've photographed Harley a bunch of times before, and she’s one of my favorite people to work with. We had a lot of fun playing around with different relationship dynamics between the two of them.
The shoot turned out really cool! Head to our Patreon if you want to see more!
