It’s official - The Conceptual Photoshoot Guide is here! I initially intended for this ebook to be just 10 pages long, but there was so much to share that it ended up being 129 pages. I poured my heart into writing this Ebook and filled it with everything I have learned on my journey as a conceptual photographer.
This guide helps spark creativity when you’re stuck or frustrated, guiding you step-by-step from idea to execution. Learn techniques for generating photoshoot ideas, infusing shoots with narrative and color theory, mastering lighting design, creating compelling scenes, directing photoshoots, using posing prompts, refining images through editing, and effectively sharing your work.

For nearly a decade, David and I were wedding and portrait photographers who felt creatively stuck and uninspired. We began experimenting in our studio with creative portrait shoots, and everything changed. We had so much fun trying new techniques, evolving our work from shooting on seamless paper backdrops to building elaborate sets out of plywood and paint. We started developing storylines and characters for our shoots, using creative props and wardrobe to infuse our photos with meaning and intention.
Instead of weddings, we began shooting album covers for musicians, editorials for fashion designers, and even a few celebrities. Our work started winning awards and being exhibited in galleries—all because we dared to experiment and create work that resonated with us.
I want the same for you. I want you to experience that “OMG - Did I really just create that?!” feeling after your next shoot.
In this guide, I’ve included the tools David and I use to generate ideas, plan shoots, think about color and lighting, and use posing tips and prompts. You’ll also find our editing workflow and the resources we use to publish our work in magazines and other platforms.
